Todorov's Theory:
Barthes' Enigma COde

1. A state OF equilibrium

2. A disruption to the Equilibrium

3. Recognition that the disorder has occurred

4. Attempt to repair the damage

5. return to a new equilibrium

We keep watching a film because of enigma.It is very simple,the narrative has to keep setting up questions to keep the viewer watching.The viewer will want to continue to watch the filmto find out the answers for the questions.

WE do not only need one enigma,we need many enigmas to make viewers still focused on the film.An example is Peter Quills's Headphones from Guardians of the Galaxy.Some enigmas raised from this object is.why is he emotional about?what is it's backstory?why is it special to him?why is he still using this in the future?

Equilibrium-->Disequilibrium-->New Equilibrium

Levi-Strauss's Binary Opposition:

This theory says that in a successful narrative there will be conflicts at every level. Levi Strauss says that this is the most important thing in a narrative.

A famous example is from Star Wars (Original Trilogy).Luke Skywalker and the rebel alliance represents freedom and good while Darth Vader and the empire represents Enslavement and evil.

PRopps' Character Archetypes THeory:

Propps's THeory says that there are often 8 archetypes in many narratives. Propps noticed that these 8 types pop up in many narratives.This theory also explains when we know who the hero is, we can know there are only certain things the hero would do.
